Boston, MA, United States (AHN) - Diabetes may be both a cause and a consequence of depression, according to a new study.
Harvard School of Public Health researchers studied the relationship between the two diseases among 65,381 women between the ages of 50 to 75 in 1996. The participants were given questionnaires about their medical history and health practices. They were followed up every two years through 2006.
The participants were considered to have depression if they reported symptoms of depression, using antidepressant drugs or diagnosed with depression by their doctor. Women who reported a new diagnosis of diabetes completed a different questionnaire about symptoms, diagnostic tests and treatments.
After 10 years, 2,844 women were diagnosed with type-2 diabetes and 7,415 developed depression. Women with depression were about 17 percent more likely to develop diabetes after controlling for other risk factors like physical activity and body mass index.
Participants taking antidepressants had a 25-percent greater risk of developing diabetes than those without depression, the researchers said in a statement.
The researchers also said that, after controlling for other risk factors, women with diabetes were 29 percent more likely to develop depression. Women taking insulin were 53 percent more likely to develop depression than women without diabetes, the researchers said.
A full report on the study is published in the Nov. 22 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine.
