What is my blog about?

This blog will help to demonstrate concept/meaning of depression. You learn the different helpful tips from reading articles, videos, visual and hearing models and etc. to help illustrate the situation on depression or even yourself in this case. You will begin to realize the difference between normal sadness and depression and how they are linked to each other. You also see how depression has effected teens, children, and adults.Depression is a huge problem among people worldwide. It doesn't matter what age, race, ethnicity, or background you are, it's a problem for all. Although it is relatively part of the human condition people need to know how to handle and escape from it. In addition researching on depression will help me to deal with depression with patients who have this mood disorder in the future when I become a nurse and further my studies in school.

This picture below illustrate depression in premature infants. Infants are affected by this also. It affects everyone no matter who you are:

This is my poster.
I chose this idea illustrate my topic on depression.
The colors in my poster represents sadness and misery.

Introduction to article:

This article is about Paul Boyd who is died

who was shot by a police in a bad situation. Before

he died he explain that he had some mental illness.

He use to feel over excited about things  and had bipolar:

Bipolar sufferers feel extreme highs, lows, even hallucinate

Paul Boyd's family released a statement through Vancouver police on Monday.
Only Paul Boyd will ever know why he laughed and growled like a wild animal as he was shot eight times during a police incident in Vancouver three years ago.
Rennie Hoffman, executive director of the Mood Disorders Association of B.C., said the condition Boyd was in would mean he wouldn't be experiencing "a normal reaction."
"Mr. Boyd would have known what was in his mind at that time, but I wouldn't attempt to explain it," Hoffman told The Province on Tuesday.
An inquest into Boyd's death has heard that he suffered from bipolar disorder and was not taking his medications when he attacked a police officer with a bicycle chain.
Hoffman retired from the Vancouver Police Department with the rank of sergeant in 2003.
"I've been on both sides and I've seen the devastating effects of mental illness, in terms of the criminal justice system," he said.
Once referred to as "manic depression," bipolar disorder is a disease of the brain that causes sufferers to feel an extreme emotional high or excitement -- mania -- at times, and deep depression at other times.
"Most people experience a mania that is pleasurable to them that provides them with a lot of energy or a heightened sense of importance, or enjoyment, or what they can accomplish," said Hoffman.
"Mostly, it is a disease that interferes significantly with your life."
People who have bipolar disorder "can experience all parts of a psychosis," said Hoffman. "They can feel things that aren't there. They hear things that nobody else in the immediate vicinity can hear."

Introduction to Article:

This article is about depression. It talks about how consuming low vitamin D affects the mood of elderly people. A group people have done studies to prove this case. This article is a solution to help those  who have the similar problem.

Low vitamin D causes depression in older people

(NaturalNews) Insufficient levels of vitamin D have been linked to a higher risk of depression in adults over the age of 65, in a study conducted by researchers from the National Institute on Aging in Baltimore and published in theJournal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.

"[Preventing] vitamin D deficiency in the elderly may become in the future a strategy to prevent the development of depressive mood in the elderly and avoid its deleterious consequences on health," the researchers wrote. "In addition, normalization of vitamin D levels may be part of anydepressiontreatment plans in older patients."

The study was conducted on 423 men and 531womenwho were participating in the InCHIANTI Study on loss of mobility in theelderly. All participants were over the age of 65.

At the beginning of the study, 18 percent of men and 42 percent of women were depressed. A full 72 percent of those suffering from depression also had insufficient levels of vitamin D in their blood (less than 50 nanomoles per liter), in contrast to only 60 percent of those not suffering from depression. Among women, insufficient levels of vitamin D were linked to a significantly greater decline inmoodover the course of three and six years. In addition, women who were not depressed at the beginning of the study but who had insufficient levels of vitamin D were significantly more likely to become depressed in the following six years than their counterparts with sufficient levels of the vitamin.

Although similar effects were also seen in male participants, the connection between vitamin D and mood was not statistically significant and thus might have been caused by chance.

Vitamin Ddeficiencyis known to increase theriskof fractures and osteoporosis, and may also increase the risk of infection, autoimmune disorders and chronic diseases such as cancer and heartdisease.

Information on Unipolar Depression/ Disorder:

Unipolar depression is another form of depression. Depression phases last 6 months and more phases . Its neurotransmitters in the brain affect the mood and this enables one to become depressed in this case.  This occurs in early adulthood. It affects the mood. It another name for major depressive disorder. It results may people notice change in weight and sleep, fatigue, guilt, thoughts in suicide and death, and many more. People who have these symptoms may begin to notice that it is major depression or unipolar depression. Unipolar depression is use to distinguish itself from bipolar and other forms of depression. A person experiences periods that reoccurs back and forth

Cyclothymia Depression:
It is a form of bipolar which leads to it. It is a disorder. It is mild form of bipolar  and usually is affected during adulthood. Many have this because it in the family and is in the genes. It effects self-esteem,agitation, dangerous behaviors, excessive belief in positivity, and other negative outcomes. Medication can help in recovery and can treat a person with this disorder in controlling the symptoms.
It may affect female more than males. Many people also experience mood swings.

Introduction to Article:

This articles shows how such drugs that are used as antidepressant may not be a help strategy in recovery. People who take Prozac( medicine used for improving depression) may bring people back after  long period of improvement . This article gives statistics has supporting evidence in studies.

Conventional drug treatments don't really help teenage depression

NaturalNews) Teenagers who take drugs like Prozac for depression may not experience any long-term improvement, says a new study published in the journalArchives of Adolescent Psychiatry. According to the study, roughly 50 percent of youth who experience some short-term relief end up relapsing with five years, and the drug works no better than placebo at relieving depression symptoms.

John Curry and his colleagues from Duke University in North Carolina observed 196 young men and women between the ages of 12 and 17 who haddepressionsymptoms. The team administered either Eli Lilly'sProzac(fluoxetine), cognitive behavioral therapy, both, or a placebo, astreatment. After five years, 46.6 percent of all participants, including those in theplacebogroup, relapsed back into depression.

Even though just over 88 percent of participants experienced some type of recovery within two years, a significant number of them reverted back to their previous depressions, regardless of their treatment protocol. And females were more prone than males to have such a relapse.

"We need to learn why females in this age range have higher chances of descending into another major depression after they have made serious recovery," explained Curry in a statement. "Further research needs to be done to confirm our findings and to sort out the variables that may be associated with recurrent major depression in youngwomen."

But more alarming is the fact thatdrugslike Prozac work no better than placebo at treating depression. And since Prozac is linked to a whole host of serious side effects, including death (http://www.naturalnews.com/Prozac.html), it is imperative that the public take this into consideration before opting for depression drugs.

Introduction to Articles:
The article is about how Canadian neurologists have developed a new solution to cure depression with little side effects. They have done studies to back up their logic.  I thought this article was interesting.

Depression cure with little side-effect found:
Canadian neuroscientists have developed a protein peptide to cure deep depression with little side-effects. In their study at the University of Toronto and
the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH)here, the neuroscientists found that coupling between two dopamine receptors - which control neurological processes in the central nervous system- was significantly elevated in the brains of people suffering from deep depression.

"We identified a potential therapeutic target for development of novel anti-depressants,'' a university statement quoted principal investigator and senior scientist Fang Liu in CAMH's neuroscience programme. Working from this discovery, researchers sought to find a way to disrupt coupling between the two receptors in hopes that it would have an anti-depressant effect, the statement said.

They generated a protein peptide to disrupt the binding of the two receptors. The peptide was then tested in animal models to compare the effects with existing anti-depressant medications.

"After we administered the peptide, we saw a marked improvement in depression-related behaviours. The improvement seen in the peptide group was equivalent to the improvement on traditional anti-depressant medication,'' said Liu.

This peptide offers an entirely new approach to treating depression, which has previously relied on medications that primarily block serotonin or norepinephrine transporters, the statement said. These conventional antidepressant medications don't work for all patients, and can cause various side effects.

"We are hopeful that our research will lead to new options for treatment that might have reduced side effects for patients with depression,'' said Liu.

Depression is a leading cause of disability worldwide. The study has been published in this month's Nature Medicine .
